Preparations for Your First Day in Sydney

On your first day, you will be arriving at Kingsford Sydney airport with luggage, a backpack, and possibly another shopping bag that you have managed to carry along the journey. If you are traveling alone or as a couple, this is not a major issue. However, if you are traveling with children, it requires more focus and concentration as there will be a lot going on.

In this page, I want to cover the most essential points that you need to know, without overwhelming you with unnecessary information. My hope is that you can quickly and easily get out of the airport and reach your designated accommodation. So here are 3 things you need to do.

Mobile phone

1. Get your mobile SIM card and establish your phone number. I highly recommend this, even if you have a roaming plan. In case you do not have someone picking you up, you will need to contact your accommodation. Getting a SIM card is easy and can be done at the airport. Just make sure to activate it before leaving the airport.

Plan Travel

2. Plan your travel in advance. You will most likely be using UBER, TAXI, or public transportation such as the train or bus. Plan your trip using Google Maps. Please note that on weekends, train services are often replaced with buses due to trackwork. This may add to the already overwhelming experience of arriving in a new city. As you will also be carrying your luggage, it is best to be prepared for the worst and have your internet ready for navigation. The great thing about public transportation in Sydney is that any credit card, even those from overseas, can be used for tapping. Just make sure to have international transactions enabled before arriving in Sydney. You can also check fares on https://transportnsw.info.

Time of Arrival

3. Check your time of arrival. This will help you plan and prepare for your first night and the following morning. Make sure to have food and essentials ready in case of an emergency, as most shops are closed after 5pm. As you plan your mode of travel, be aware of the nearest grocery stores. This is especially important if you are heading straight to an Airbnb that is not located close to any shops.
